GMO Alert: Dow a step closer to commercializing canola oil with meaningful levels of DHA omega-3
GMO alert! Buyer beware! I saw this article and thought you might find it interesting if not valuable. It's about a new form of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA derived from a genetically modified canola plant. Problem is that this can't happen naturally outside of living systems like marine animals (salmon, etc.) or humans. The way Dow Chemical is going to get this done is by genetically modifying the canola plant by "dropping in" selected genes from blue-green algae....plants that could not naturally share their genes....and something that nature would never allow.
This stuff is likely to turn up in a lot of food products and supplements in the years ahead, so this will be another reason to keep you eyes open when choosing such products.
